A member of Syria's pro-government forces guards a look out point as they advance Aleppo's rebel-held Bustan al-Basha neighbourhood on October 6, 2016. "Syrian regime forces advanced from the city centre north into (rebel-held) Bustan al-Basha, and seized a large athletic complex there," the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. This was the first time the regime had entered the district since 2013 and there had been fierce clashes, they added. GIuseppe Ungaretti: Allegria di naufragi

E subito riprende
il viaggio
come
dopo il naufragio
un superstite
lupo di mare.

                   Versa il 14 febbraio 1917

GIuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970): Allegria di naufragi (14 February 1917), from Allegria di naufragi, 1919

And immediately resumes the voyage as after the shipwreck a survivor

This Ungaretti poem was writ the day before the poem posted here yesterday. Both come from a brief respite amid intense battles in the trenches. In a note on these war poems, Ungaretti wrote: "My regiment went to Versa sometimes for days or moments of rest; it depended on the battles."
